“INCEPTION” MYSTIFIES MANILA, GROSSES P61-M IN 2 WEEKS

MANILA, July 29 – Excellent word-of-mouth and multiple viewings have driven Warner Bros.’ sci-fi thriller “Inception” to a remarkable P60.88-million gross nationwide after two weeks of release (July 15 to 28). This was announced today by Francis Soliven, general manager of Warner Bros. Philippines.
“Inception” posted a respectable P22-M gross in its first weekend, and in a rare development, earned bigger receipts in its second weekend with P23.32-million. Most titles strike with their biggest hauls during the first weekend, and go steadily down as the weeks pass.
“The film’s exceptional business is being powered by recommendations from those who’ve seen it and curiosity from those who haven’t,” noted Soliven. “Everyone’s talking about it, and in some cases, arguing over certain points about the story! It has clearly transcended the big screen.”
The cinemas that registered the biggest receipts are SM Mall of Asia (P4.25-M), Trinoma (P4.15-M), SM North EDSA (P3.70-M), Power Plant (P3.25-M), Greenbelt 3 (P2.90-M), Glorietta 4 (P2.76-M), SM Megamall (P2.40-M) and Gateway (P2.37-M).
Also earning huge grosses are Theatremall (P1.96-M), Alabang Town Center (P1.83-M), Shang Cineplex (P1.82-M), Robinsons Ermita (P1.68-M), SM Cebu (P1.40-M), Robinsons Galleria (P1.18-M), Festival (P1.06-M), Market! Market! (P889,788), SM San Lazaro (P883,250), SM Marikina (P825,854).
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan, “Inception” is an original sci-fi actioner that travels around the globe and into the intimate and infinite world of dreams.
In the film, Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a skilled thief, the best in the dangerous art of extraction: stealing valuable secrets from deep within the subconscious during the dream state when the mind is at its most vulnerable. Cobb’s rare ability has made him a coveted player in this treacherous new world of corporate espionage, but it has also made him an international fugitive and cost him everything he has ever loved. Now Cobb is being offered a chance at redemption. One last job could give him his life back but only if he can accomplish the impossible—inception. Instead of the perfect heist, Cobb and his team of specialists have to pull off the reverse; their task is not to steal an idea but to plant one. If they succeed, it could be the perfect crime.
Still playing across the Philippines in IMAX, Digital 2D and regular format, Inception is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

“THE GHOST WRITER” OPENS EXCLUSIVELY AT AYALA MALLS CINEMAS AUG 4

Winner of the Best Director prize at the 2010 Berlin Film Festival, Roman Polanski’s critically acclaimed thriller The Ghost Writer will be shown exclusively at Ayala Malls Cinemas (Glorietta 4 & Greenbelt 3) starting Wednesday, August 4.

The mystery thriller, which was adapted from the bestselling novel The Ghost by Richard Harris, stars Ewan McGregor, Pierce Brosnan, Kim Cattrall and Olivia Williams.
In the film, when a successful British ghostwriter known only as The Ghost, (McGregor) agrees to complete the memoirs of former British Prime Minister Adam Lang (Brosnan), his agent assures him it's the opportunity of a lifetime. But the project seems doomed from the start-not least because his predecessor on the project, Lang's long-term aide, died in an unfortunate accident.
The Ghost flies out to work on the project, in the middle of winter, to an oceanfront house on an island off the U.S. Eastern seaboard. But the day after he arrives, a former British cabinet minister accuses Lang of authorizing the illegal seizure of suspected terrorists and handing them over for torture by the CIA-a war crime. The controversy brings reporters and protesters swarming to the island mansion where Lang is staying with his wife, Ruth (Williams), and his personal assistant (and mistress), Amelia (Cattrall).

As The Ghost works, he begins to uncover clues suggesting his predecessor may have stumbled on a dark secret linking Lang to the CIA-and that somehow this information is hidden in the manuscript he left behind. Was Lang in the service of the American intelligence agency while he was prime minister? And was The Ghost's predecessor murdered because of the appalling truth he uncovered?

Resonating with topical themes, this atmospheric and suspenseful political thriller is a story of deceit and betrayal on every level- sexual, political and literary. In a world in which nothing, and no one, is as it seems, The Ghost quickly discovers that the past can be deadly-and that history is decided by whoever stays alive to write it.

Hating Kapatid Movie Review

Two of the country’s biggest superstars, together for the first time in a landmark team-up.

In this comedy, Judy Ann stars as Maria Rica and Sarah is Maria Cecilia, daughters of public school teachers turned OFW. Left in the care of their Lola Gerty (Gina PareƱo), Rica and Cecilia grow up in Bocaue, Bulacan, where they help look after the family’s firecracker business. The two girls are inseparable. Rica takes her role as the big sister seriously, to the point of breaking up with her boyfriend, Bong (JC DeVera), and vowing to devote her life taking care of Cecil when the latter is hurt in a minor accident.

Ten years come to pass and their parents return home. The family moves to Manila. Rica, though an Accounting Major graduate, chooses to sell jewelry instead of getting a professional job. Cecil, on the other hand, works as a sales clerk in a video store and a promodizer of magic sing. She meets Edsel (Luis Manzano), an insurance sales agent. Rica, sensing that the two are attracted to each other tries hard to keep them apart. Cecil, wanting to make Rica happy, tracks down Bong, but the result is the exact opposite. Rica feels betrayed, especially when she learns that her baby sister is already in a relationship. She ups and leaves. Now it’s Cecil who has to find a way to fix this.

The movie is directed by Wenn V. Deramas and is written by Mel Mendoza-Del Rosario, the same team behind the record-breaking Tanging Ina series.

I was invited to watch the red carpet premier of Hating Kapatid. It was around 9pm when the artists arrived and the movie started. Grabeh and mga taong naghihintay sa cast to walk the red carpet. The movie actually made me jump out of my seat a few times coz im laughing so hard, may it be coz of Sarah, Judy Ann, Luis and especially Vice! The movie is really entertaining from start to finish, the story is very close to every filipino family. We can relate to every character in the movie. Expect a lot of Sarah endorsements, haha! I like how it was inserted in the film, actually. Sarah and Judy Ann's acting never fails. The crowd was really entertained!

Inception Movie Review

Dom Cobb is a skilled thief, the absolute best in the dangerous art of extraction, stealing valuable secrets from deep within the subconscious during the dream state when the mind is at its most vulnerable. Cobb's rare ability has made him a coveted player in this treacherous new world of corporate espionage, but it has also made him an international fugitive and cost him everything he has ever loved. Now Cobb is being offered a chance at redemption. One last job could give him his life back but only if he can accomplish the impossible -- inception. Instead of the perfect heist, Cobb and his team of specialists have to pull off the reverse: their task is not to steal an idea but to plant one. If they succeed, it could be the perfect crime. But no amount of careful planning or expertise can prepare the team for the dangerous enemy that seems to predict their every move. An enemy that only Cobb could have seen coming.

I still can't find the right words to describe this movie. The awesomeness from the storyline to the effects, to the actors, to the direction is all but great.

Story. A movie is only as great as the story and the storyline. I believe that even if the characters are not that well known, the movie can move on with a good story. Inception is one great movie. It's been a week (late post, i know) and still I can't get the movie out of my mind. The complexity of the story is what makes it great! You will really need to analyze and pay close attention to every scene, every move and every line. If you know Air Bender, then I call this movie, Mind Bender. Nolan has planted the idea that this movie will reap millions after the first showing, haha!

Actors. Leonardo Di Caprio has proven himself in almost all of his films. Even the new actors Ellen Page and Marion Cotillard, were excellent in their own roles. I appreciate Ken Watanabe and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the team and their characters as well. The whole team, did very great.

Effects. Visuals. It was made clear how one can share and explore dreams, even build something in the dream. Nolan is genius to even make it multi layered. Watch out for the second level non gravitational fighting scene of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, i love it! The setting of the dreamworld would let you wander and make your mind create a world that you desire.

Inception is a movie that will stay long, the talk of the town kind of movie, even after it has been released. Every bit of the movie is just brilliant, from the director, actors, effects, and even the production. Kudos!

Sorcerer's Apprentice Movie Review

Magic has always been a big fantasy to me. I loved Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, Twilight Saga, and many others that has magic wands, book of spells, potions, etc.

Balthazar Blake is a master sorcerer in modern day Manhattan trying to defend the city from his arch-nemesis, Maxim Horvath.Balthazar can't do it alone, so he recruits Dave Stutler, a seemingly average guy who demonstrates hidden potential, as his reluctant protege. The sorcerer gives his unwilling accomplice a crash course in the art and science of magic., and together, these unlikely partners work to stop the forces of darkness. It'll take all the courage Dave can muster to survive his training, save the city and get the girl as he becomes The Sorcerer's Apprentice.

Story
. I like the way the story is combined ancient and modern day Manhattan. It reaches out to contemporary audience which makes it magical. The battle between good and evil is always there, plus a few magic tricks and a mixture of geekiness! I just didn't feel the "fight-plasma-scene" at the end. I was expecting a little something more.

Actors. You can never go wrong with Nicholas Cage (Balthazar), flat hair or not. He's a manic actor that brings out his character in every movie he's in. He's well loved by almost everybody. Jay Baruchel (Dave) is as nerd as I think he should be in the movie. He played the average teenage boy that is expected of him. Now, watching Alfred Molina (Horvath) on screen makes me think that I'm watching SpiderMan. Haha! He's got the evilness in his character in every movie he's in.

Visuals. CGI is great. I think modern magic is the new thing. The plasma volt though is an easy power, a sorcerer can pull. ( I think) I was expecting a little bit more on Dace's encounter with Morgana, but pulling up a little physics there was good enought to justify the modern magic.

It's a good family movie. The magic is exciting and moral value on relationship is a good quality piece of worth.

Rating: 3/5

Street Dance 3D Movie Review

My first time to watch a UK dance film and it's not that bad because it's in 3D!

I Like. The lead's pretty face and even the body, haha! The dance moves, they were awesome, I'm such a frustrated dancer. The way it's presented in 3D, its just like watching Harry Potter but in a modern setting. I like the idea of combining street dance and ballet dance and how it became a Breaking Point in dancing.

I don't like. The accent, there were some instances that I can't understand what Carly (lead actress) is saying. The Story is too simple, there's always a competition and I didn't feel there was really a defending champion because they just showed up in the end. The acting is good but i feel they could have expressed their character more, instead they focused on their dance and their moves.

Letters to Juliet Movie Rview

I am a sucker for romantic movies. I love every bit of romantic gestures from a guy, every single rose or chocolate; suprised or even expected, every kiss and every hug and most of all the I love you's..

Letters to Juliet is an enchanting story of finding love, losing love and finding it again. Set in the romantic city, Italy, Sophie (played by Amanda Seyfried) had an amazing journey that changed her life forever.

The story is great, a bit fantasia though. It's a relief actually from all the other love story movie, no alcohol, no drugs, no sex, no violence. Pure LOVE. way back from Romeo and Juliet's love influence. The characters are all good and I specially like Claire. After all these years, she is still looking for her true love. So sweet. Ofcourse, equivalent to all two sweet lady character is the obnoxious leading man, which would ofcourse, in the course of time would eventually fall for Sophie.

The movie made me think, do we really settle for the one that we have right now?

Toy Story 3 Movie Review

What supposedly was the breakout comedy of the summer turned out to be the ironically tearjerker movie for me. I can't deny that Toy Story 1 and Toy Story 2 really made me cry, and among the 3, my fave is the last.

Toy Story 3 is the realization that Andy has finally grown up and that the gang is uncertain of their future. While Andy is getting ready for college, the toys are getting ready to face their future, whether it be with or without Andy.

The movie still has the funny lines, real moments of suspense (for awhile i thought they were really gonna burn), crazy antics, emotional outburst and the strong narrative. Both kids and adults can relate and would love the movie. It's a masterpiece that would touch your heart, make you laugh, value friendship, and makes you experience life.
