“Kingsman: The Secret Service” stars Colin Firth and Taron Egerton, the latter of whom plays Eggsy, an exceptional young man who is squandering his potential in life and getting caught up in petty crime.

Firth's Jack, who knew Eggsy's father is there to offer the boy a way out of trouble. And trouble arrives at the pub they're at in the form of a gang of toughs who have a beef with Eggsy.

"Kingsman: The Secret Service" will open on October 23 in cinemas from 20th Century Fox.

"Bourne" Director Takes Audiences to "Edge of Tomorrow"

From Doug Liman, the acclaimed director of “The Bourne Identity” and “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” comes the exhilarating sci-fi thriller “Edge of Tomorrow” starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt.

In “Edge of Tomorrow,” the world is at war with an indefatigable alien force no army, let alone individual, can conquer, and the greatest battle is still to come. Countless men and women will fight and all will be lost to these “Mimics,” unless the United Defense Force’s least likely recruit can succeed in employing a most implausible strategy: Live. Die. Repeat.

In the film, Tom Cruise plays Major William Cage, a military PR man who’s never been to the front line but who, thanks to his ill-advised threat to a four-star general, ends up trapped in an alien-induced time loop, fighting for his life…and death.

Doug Liman was drawn to the project by the extreme and extremely unusual circumstances in which Cage finds himself. “The concept of this really unique time loop hooked me in,” he says. “It opened everything up and created an opportunity to explore what was interesting about Tom’s character and to witness, day after day of the same day, what takes Cage to the brink. It also forces him to become not only the soldier, but the man, he has to be. When I find a project like this, that has a deeper meaning conveyed with tremendous action and great humor, that’s a movie I want to make.”

Emily Blunt a New Kind of Female Warrior in "Edge of Tomorrow"

A Golden Globe-winning actress whose transformative ability and versatile performances make her one of the most in demand actresses of today, Emily Blunt (“Looper”) now plays Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski in Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Village Roadshow Pictures’ sci-fi thriller “Edge of Tomorrow.”

“I was really excited to play someone as tough, badass and physically dangerous as Rita,” says Blunt. “But when I read the script, mixed in with this very cool story and intense action sequences I also found a lot of laughs, as well as incredible determination and perserverance of the human spirit.”

“Edge of Tomorrow” unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world. Major William Cage (Tom Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop—forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again…and again.

Cage’s strange ability to turn the clock back only begins to make sense to him when he is able to partner with the one person who seems to understand: Sgt. Rita Vrataski. “Cage and Rita lead the charge together in this story,” Cruise allows. “It’s a total partnership; they may start out as unlikely allies, but they both discover they won’t survive without each other.”

“I’m committed to strong female characters, and I think Rita is the strongest in any of my films thus far,” director Doug Liman states. “She is a true veteran combatant who has led the charge and killed thousands of Mimics.”

Warner Releases "Rurouni Kenshin" Sequels in PH Aug 20 & Sept 24

Warner Bros. Pictures Philippines will roll-out a back-to-back release platform for the eagerly anticipated sequels of “Rurouni Kenshin.” This was announced today by Francis Soliven, General Manager of Warner Bros. (F.E.), Inc.

The first sequel, “Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno” will open here on Aug. 20, 2014, to be followed one month after by “Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends” on Sept. 24, 2014. (The teaser trailer for the two titles can now be viewed here.)

The release pattern will allow fans to experience the cathartic conclusion to the celebrated saga with little time in between and honors the filmmakers' wishes as to how the sequels should be viewed. The twin features will have the same opening window in Japan.

With the release of the original “Rorouni Kenshin” last year, Japanese cinema entered a new era. A commercial film combining unparalleled speed and overwhelming action in a moving human drama, it was an explosive blockbuster that was met with riotous enthusiasm by the fans.

This was the first motion picture inspired by Kenshin the Wanderer: The Romance of the Meiji Swordsman (Shueisha Jump Comics), the monumental manga comic by Nobuhiro Watsuki that has sold more than 5.8 million copies and been translated into more than 20 languages.

Directed by Keishi Ōtomo, the film told of fictional events that took place during the early Meiji period in Japan, focusing on a wanderer named Himura Kenshin (Takeru Satoh), formerly known as the assassin Hitokiri Battōsai. After participating in the Bakumatsu war, Kenshin wanders the countryside of Japan offering protection and aid to those in need as atonement for the murders he once committed as an assassin.
The filmmakers faced a serious challenge in meeting the high expectations of the manga fans, a challenge they succeeded beyond anyone’s expectations as the film arrived to a rapturous reception throughout Japan, quickly taking in more than 3 billion yen at the box office. Word-of-mouth spread quickly overseas, and “Rurouni Kenshin” was shown in 31 festivals and received distribution in 64 territories, including the Philippines.

The production team was aware from the start that the “Rurouni Kenshin” story would not be complete without a film version of the “Kyoto Arc,” the highest-rated and best-loved segment that serves as a climax to the manga series. Coincidentally, the resolution and determination with which the main character Kenshin survives through a turbulent age serve as a guidepost to the filmmakers.

And so, in answer to calls from around the world demanding “more Kenshin,” the filmmakers proudly present “Kyoto Inferno” and “The Legend Ends.”

Major William Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop—forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again…and again.

Up Close with “MALEFICENT” Characters

Starting May 28, Philippine audiences will find themselves face-to-face with Disney’s most iconic villain “Maleficent” on an exciting adventure through a fascinating world that will unveil more about the film's characters than they ever imagined. But before that, let's meet the characters up close and find out their motivations.

Maleficent (Angelina Jolie) benevolently protects her home—the forest kingdom over which she presides—and all the creatures that dwell there, but a harsh betrayal turns Maleficent’s pure heart stone cold. Driven by relentless revenge and a fierce passion to protect her land from invaders, the now vindictive and ruthless Maleficent places an irrevocable curse on the human king’s newborn baby, Aurora.

Stefan (Sharlto Copley) is a childhood friend of Maleficent’s who comes from the human kingdom outside of the forest Maleficent calls home. Over time Stefan becomes consumed with his ambition to be King and will stop at nothing to achieve his goal.

Diaval (Sam Riley) is Maleficent’s loyal servant, who, on her command, can take on different forms to suit her purposes. He serves as Maleficent’s conscience and has strong beliefs, which he is not afraid to act upon.

Aurora (Elle Fanning) is a curious and thoughtful child who develops a bond with nature that rivals only Maleficent’s. But as she grows, Aurora is caught in the middle of the seething conflict between the forest kingdom she has grown to love and the human kingdom that holds her legacy.

The Flower Pixies. The three inept Flower Pixies are charged with caring for Aurora until her sixteenth birthday. Knotgrass (Imelda Staunton) is a tangled knot of bad humor, bossy and a superior to the other two Pixies. Flittle (Lesley Manville) is a blue Flower Pixie. She always has butterflies flying around her head. Thistlewit (Juno Temple), the youngest of the Pixies, is always giddy, playful and childlike.

King Henry (Kenneth Cranham). Before the end of his reign, conniving King Henry is determined to add the forest kingdom that Maleficent protects to his conquests at any cost in order to reap the benefits of the treasures it contains.

Princess Leila (Hannah New). King Henry’s daughter Princess Leila loyally performs her duty as princess by marrying Stefan and bearing his daughter, Aurora.

Prince Phillip (Brenton Thwaites). Handsome Prince Phillip happens upon teenage Aurora as he is traveling to the castle to meet the king. He promises that they will soon meet again—it is love at first sight.

Opening across the Philippines on May 28, 2014, “Maleficent” is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International through Columbia Pictures.

The sequel, in which Spider-Man faced off against super villains Electro and Green Goblin, surpassed the first two-day box office receipts of previous record-holder “Iron Man 3” (P110.9-M), as well as recent superhero blockbusters, namely “Marvel's The Avengers” (P100.8-M), “Man of Steel” (P92.7-M), “The Amazing Spider-Man” (P85.6-M), “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” (P53.8-M), “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” (P49.3-M) and “The Dark Knight Rises” (P36.6-M).

Box-office earnings for “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” jumpstarted on April 30 with P49.43-M, breaching the highest opening day record for 2014. Figures dramatically rose the next day, May 1 with P63.14-M which also dethroned the crown for biggest Thursday gross ever.

“Amazing 2” has already captured an impressive overseas gross of more than $155 million in just two weeks, and is expected to claim an opening of $100 million in the U.S. this weekend.

In the Philippines, the largest earnings were posted by SM Mall of Asia at P6-M, followed by SM North EDSA, P5.53-M and SM Megamall, P5.54-M.

The Top 4 to 20 cinemas include Trinoma (P4.29-M), Glorietta 4 (P3.18-M), SM Cebu (P2.88-M), Greenhills Promenade (P2.21-M), SM Southmall (P2.18-M), Alabang Town Center (P2.10-M), SM Aura (P2-M), Eastwood (P1.95-M), Power Plant (P1.85-M), Greenbelt 3 (P1.82-M), Newport (P1.78-M), Gateway (P1.77-M), Market! Rounding out the Top 30 theaters are SM Marikina (P1,570,875), SM Fairview (P1,570,353), Bonifacio High Street (P1.55-M), Robinsons Ermita (P1.50-M), Robinsons Galleria (P1.49-M), SM San Lazaro (P1.42-M), Festival (P1.38-M), Fisher Mall (P1.32-M), Sta. Lucia East (P1.29-M) and SM Manila (P1.24-M).

In the film, Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) feels there’s nothing quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: Oscorp.

“The Amazing Spider-Man 2” is directed by Marc Webb and produced by Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach. Screenplay by Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci & Jeff Pinkner. Screen Story by Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci & Jeff Pinkner and James Vanderbilt. Based on the Marvel Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko.

Feast Your Eyes on the New “GODZILLA”

For the filmmakers overseeing the complex production of the epic, action adventure “Godzilla,” there was perhaps nothing more challenging or exhilarating than the creation of its title character.

“Toho had given us their blessing to re-envision the character, but it was equally important to us as well as Toho that Godzilla look like Godzilla,” producer Thomas Tull says. “We wanted to bring him into contemporary reality while not steering too far from the classic silhouette that so many of us grew up with, and [director] Gareth Edwards and the entire team walked that line with passion and inspiration.”

The effort to make Godzilla live onscreen with as much detail and realism as possible engendered a broad coalition of creative minds, incorporating the talents of lead creature and concept designer Matt Allsopp, and Weta Workshop, Ltd.’s creature designers Andrew Baker, Christian Pearce and Greg Broadmore, as well as storyboard illustrators, keyframe animation and texture artists at Moving Picture Company (MPC), and specialists in sound, movement and performance, all unified through Edwards’ vision for the character.
“Everybody chipped in,” Edwards remembers. “What we were trying to find was what Godzilla would look like if you actually saw him in the real world. One of the conversations we’d have quite often was asking, ‘If this was a person, who would it be?’ And after thinking about it for a while, what we came up with was the idea that he was like the last Samurai—a lone, ancient warrior that would prefer to not be part of the world if he could, but events force him to resurface. We did lots of illustrations and concepts, and it took us over a year to really get it right.”

SHAILENE WOODLEY’S Little Infinities - “THE FAULT IN OUR STARS”

In less than a month, the world’s most anticipated love story from the worldwide tearjerker book of the same title – “The Fault In Our Stars” will finally open in Philippine cinemas on June 5.

Already marked on everyone’s calendar who had been touched, moved and affected by the young adult bestselling novel by John Green, June 5 marks the larger-than-life infinites of Hazel and Gus’ (played by Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort) on the big screen.

“The Fault In Our Stars” is the story of two remarkable teenagers who fall in love and embrace life despite the strong odds against them. Both are smart, funny and sarcastic. When they meet at a support group, Hazel Grace Lancaster is instantly smitten with Augustus Waters. The feeling is mutual. Hazel is battling cancer; Augustus is in remission and has been given the all clear from his doctors.  Despite dealing with serious health concerns on a daily basis, health doesn’t dominate life for Augustus and Hazel. Far from it. They are normal teenagers, excited about first love and getting to know each other. It’s clear from the start that there is strong chemistry between this attractive pair. They don’t see eye to eye on everything, but their connection is powerful and they both have a great sense of humor about their circumstances.

Shailene Woodley takes on the role of Hazel Grace Lancaster.  The young star of “Divergent” and “The Descendants” says “The Fault In Our Stars” will forever leave a lasting impression on her.  “It was truly one of the biggest honors of my life to be a part of this project.  Both the film and novel explore the most powerful and universal themes.  The story taught me that all is fleeting, that nothing is guaranteed, and that however long or short a life you live, it is the small moments that mean the most."
