“THE TOWN” – WELCOME TO AMERICA’S BANK ROBBERY CAPITAL

There are over 300 bank robberies in Boston every year. And a one-square-mile neighborhood in Boston, called Charlestown, has produced more bank and armored car robbers than anywhere in the U.S. It is against that backdrop that Warner Bros.’ new gripping thriller The Town is set.

In the film, Doug MacRay (Ben Affleck), is a prolific bank robber but he is not cut from the same cloth as his fellow thieves. Unlike them, Doug had a chance at success, a chance to escape following in his father’s criminal footsteps. Instead he became the leader of a crew of ruthless bank robbers, who pride themselves on taking what they want and getting out clean. The only family Doug has are his partners in crime, especially Jem (Jeremy Renner), who, despite his dangerous, hair-trigger temper, is the closest thing Doug ever had to a brother.

However, everything changed on the gang’s last job when Jem briefly took a hostage: bank manager Claire Keesey (Rebecca Hall). When they discover she lives in Charlestown, Jem gets nervous and wants to check out what she might have seen. Knowing what Jem is capable of, Doug takes charge. He seeks out Claire, who has no idea that their encounter is not by chance or that this charming stranger is one of the men who terrorized her only days before.

As his relationship with Claire deepens into a passionate romance, Doug wants out of this life and the town. But with the Feds, led by Agent Frawley (Jon Hamm), closing in and Jem questioning his loyalty, Doug realizes that getting out will not be easy and, worse, may put Claire in the line of fire. Any choices he once had have boiled down to one: betray his friends or lose the woman he loves.

The Town also stars Blake Lively, Oscar® nominee Pete Postlethwaite and Academy Award® winner Chris Cooper.

Directed by Ben Affleck, The Town is based on the novel Prince of Thieves, written by Chuck Hogan. Hailing from Massachusetts, Hogan situated the crime drama in Charlestown for a reason: the Boston neighborhood has produced more bank and armored car robbers than any other single square mile in the world. The seeds of that distinction were more than likely planted when Charlestown was the site of a maximum security prison, leading to a self-perpetuating criminal enclave. Affleck offers, “It served as a kind of revolving door. People would go to prison and their families would move there, and, as they got out and then went back in, a community developed around it. It was hypothesized in the book—and we included it in the film—that robbing banks became a trade that was passed down from fathers to sons.”

Jeremy Renner, who plays the role of Doug’s accomplice and best friend, Jem, adds, “In that very small, tight-knit community, they developed a strict code of silence. Everybody knew everything, but nobody talked, which made it easier to be successful in that line of work.”

Opening soon across the Philippines, The Town is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

DIRECTOR RYAN MURPHY TALKS ABOUT “EAT PRAY LOVE”

For Nip/Tuck and Glee creator Ryan Murphy — a man who likes change — discovering the best-selling memoir Eat Pray Love proved a real boon. The 44-year-old filmmaker read the book upon its 2006 release and felt an immediate connection. He’d even go as far as saying that the book altered his life.

“It spoke to me on such a personal level,” begins Murphy, the man who adapted the screenplay and directed the cinematic incarnation starring Julia Roberts. “I read it as a fan, I had just come through a terrible break up, and what it said to me is that it is never too late to reinvent yourself. It is never too late to try to be happy. If you are in a bad relationship try and get out of it and if you don’t like where you are living, try and change it.”

The book, and indeed the film, tells the true-life tale of Elizabeth Gilbert, a successful travel writer who falls out of love with her husband and suffers a painful divorce. Gnawed at by guilt, she takes a year out, heading first to Rome in Italy, where she indulges her passion for food (Eat), then to an ashram in India, where she bids to find a spiritual meaning to her life (Pray), and finally to a familiar haunt in Bali, where, out of the blue, she meets, and falls for, a Brazilian man (Love). It is a hugely popular book, which spent three uninterrupted years on the New York Times best-seller list.

“It is about a general way of living your life. I love the phrase that they’re using to market the movie which is, ‘Let yourself go.’ I know that not everybody can afford to take a year off from work and travel round the world. I can’t. But I don’t think you need to leave your house to try and find something spiritual and find joy. So the book expanded my worldview. It got me out of my shell. It made me feel that it is okay to try something that you are not comfortable with. It did change my life.”

In fact, the book had such a profound effect on Murphy’s life that he adapted a screenplay and ensured that he got the job directing the movie. Murphy already had moviemaking experience, having adapted and directed the film version of Augusten Burrough’s controversial memoir Running with Scissors, although adapting and shooting Eat Pray Love gave him the chance to step up to the next level, to make a truly commercial movie, with a positive message, and to assemble a dazzling array of major movie stars.

Among the impressive supporting cast, Murphy draws performances from Javier Bardem (Liz’s Brazilian love interest), Billy Crudup (her ex-husband), James Franco (a lover who awakens her interest in spirituality) and Richard Jenkins (an older man who encourages her to let go of her guilt), while the role of Liz Gilbert herself is played by one of the biggest movie stars in the world, Julia Roberts, which is something of a coup for Murphy; not since her Oscar-winning turn in Steven Soderbergh’s 2000 drama Erin Brockovich has Roberts appeared in every scene of a film.

“And yet I want to see a movie where Julia Roberts is in every scene,” beams Murphy. “I grew up with Julia Roberts. I love her. I had ideas that I wanted for Julia Roberts in make up, hair and clothes, things that she had never done before.” He laughs. “I think she thinks I am kind of insane because I was so passionate about her, but I also think that she liked the fact that we saw the story in the same way.”

Opening soon across the Philippines, Eat Pray Love is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International. Sneak Peek: Eat, Pray, Love

I just love Julia Roberts and almost all her movies :) Last time i saw her i think was with Valentines Day. And now this Academy Award winner stars again in a drama adaptation of the Eat Pray Love. The film is based on Elizabeth Gilbert‘s international bestseller of the same title.

In the film, Liz Gilbert (Roberts) is a modern woman on a quest to marvel at and travel the world while rediscovering and reconnecting with her true inner self. At a crossroads after a divorce, Gilbert takes a year-long sabbatical from her job and uncharacteristically steps out of her comfort zone, risking everything to change her life. In her wondrous and exotic travels, she experiences the simple pleasure of eating in Italy, the power of prayer in India, and, finally and unexpectedly, the inner peace and balance of love in Bali.
Indeed, there really is more than one way to let yourself go and see the world.

Eat Pray Love is produced by Dede Gardner, with a screenplay by Ryan Murphy & Jennifer Salt. Executive producers are Brad Pitt, Stan Wlodkowski, and Jeremy Kleiner. Director of Photography is Robert Richardson, ASC. Production Designer is Bill Groom. Editor is Bradley Buecker. Costume Designer is Michael Dennison. Music by Dario Marianelli. Music Supervision by PJ Bloom.

Opening soon across the Philippines, Eat Pray Love is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International. Visit www.sonypictures.com.ph to get the latest movie news, video clips, games and free downloads.

Beware of SALISI GANG. Muntik na akong maging biktima.

I know this may sound old school but until now still on they are still on the lose! Just this morning, I was suppose to be a victim of these ruthless people. I rode my usual jeepney ride (from Sangandaan to MCU) not knowing that something is going na to happen. I waited for a jeep na may mga nakasakay na, coz if walang laman yung jeep, that means na mag aantay pa siya and matagal pa yun. Pagkasakay ko ng jeep there were i think 5 people already, 3 ladies and 2 men. Then after a couple of minutes, may sumakay na lalaki sa sumiksik sa left side ko, i was annoyed because ang luwag luwag ng jeep eh sisiksik siya sa tabi ko. Then may sumakay pang  2 guys, that sat in front of me. I throw them nasty look because i feel they are manyak on how they look at me, (mejo plunging kasi blouse ko) then may sumakay ulit na 1 guy.. na gustong sumiksik ulit sa left side ko, pero i pointed out sa other side ng jeep so umupo siya sa harap ko.. by that time i was already irritated because of the 2 manyak men infront of me, then the last guy na nagsusumiksik.. then all of a sudden i felt something odd about the situation, that's when i looked at the guy beside me (left side) he has his right hand, under his big backpack and nilalaslasan na niya ang isa niyang katabi which is a girl, but he girl is unaware because she is distracted by the guy in front of her. The moment i saw that, the guy na sumiksik sa akin called out my attention (naka headset kasi ako) and gestured like he's asking for the time, and then i looked to my right side and the same scenario is happening nilalaslasan din yung katabi kong girl. When i figured out what was happening, i immediately got out of the jeep. Though you think im strong, and alert, deep inside nanginginig na tuhod ko :( and im super scared than you could ever imagine.

After a few minutes, sumakay na ako ng new jeep. Hindi pa gaanong nakakalayo ang sinasayan ko ng huminto ang jeep and nagsakay ng pasahero.. and to  my surprise it was the two guys infront of me kanina sa unang jeep na sinakyan ko. They were surprised when they saw me pag akyat nila and they decided not to ride the jeep. I felt more scared when i saw their faces again. I asked the girl near the unahan ng jeep why they didn't ride the jeep. She told us, that the guy muttered something which made them decide not to ride the jeep. And i told the pasaheros what happened on the first jeep. The guy beside me commented, "Ah kaya pala sabi nung mama, "andito nanaman."" I was positive about the two men from the start. Thank God at hindi ako nahold up or nanakawan or nasaktan. It was truly God's protection that we are safe every day and every night.

I would like to share some tips, that i hope would be useful to avoid instances like these.

1. Always be alert. Keep a watchful eye always on public places so you are aware of what's going on around you and you can react immediately.

2. Don't use cellphones, mp3, iTouch and other expensive gadgets on public. Seeing you with those items would only make you a target, whether it be inside or outside the jeep. Avoid AT ALL TIMES, bring those items on public. Tip: Always ready na your money whenever commuting, so you can avoid, digging your wallet outside your bag in public.

3. Don't be a superman. Though i am aware of what's happening, i didn't make a commotion to stop what was happening, instead i hurriedly got out of the jeep. If you can still avoid the situation then go for it. Don't go busting what the holdapers are doing coz they might end up doing worst.

4. Pray before leaving the house. This is the most important tip that i can share with you. I can really testify that it is really by God's protection that we are all safe.

SNEAK PEEK: “THE TOWN”

I watched the trailer of The Town and I find the movie, interesting. Here's a little sneak peek :)

Academy Award® winner Ben Affleck (Gone Baby Gone) directs and stars in Warner Bros.’ The Town, a dramatic thriller about robbers and cops, friendship and betrayal, love and hope, and escaping a past that has no future.
The film also stars Rebecca Hall (Vicky Christina Barcelona), Jon Hamm (TV’s Mad Men), Oscar® nominee Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker), Blake Lively (TV’s Gossip Girl), Oscar® nominee Pete Postlethwaite (Inception), and Academy Award® winner Chris Cooper (Adaptation).
In the film, Doug MacRay (Affleck) is an unrepentant criminal, the de facto leader of a group of ruthless bank robbers who pride themselves in stealing what they want and getting out clean. With no real attachments, Doug never has to fear losing anyone close to him. But that all changed on the gang’s latest job, when they briefly took a hostage–bank manager, Claire Keesey (Hall). Though they let her go unharmed, Claire is nervously aware that the robbers know her name… and where she lives. But she lets her guard down when she meets an unassuming and rather charming man named Doug….not realizing that he is the same man who only days earlier had terrorized her. The instant attraction between them gradually turns into a passionate romance that threatens to take them both down a dangerous, and potentially deadly, path.

The Town is produced by Academy Award® winner Graham King (The Departed) and Basil Iwanyk (Clash of the Titans) from a screenplay by Peter Craig and Ben Affleck & Aaron Stockard, based on the novel Prince of Thieves by Chuck Hogan.  The executive producers are Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni, William Fay and David Crockett, and Chay Carter served as co-producer.
The behind-the-scenes creative team was led by Oscar®-winning director of photography Robert Elswit (There Will Be Blood), production designer Sharon Seymour (Gone Baby Gone), Oscar®-nominated editor Dylan Tichenor (There Will Be Blood), and costume designer Susan Matheson (The Kingdom).  The music is composed by Harry Gregson-Williams and David Buckley, who previously collaborated on Affleck’s Gone Baby Gone.

The film follows Soren (voice of Jim Sturgess), a young owl enthralled by his father’s epic stories of the Guardians of Ga’ Hoole, a mythic band of winged warriors who had fought a great battle to save all of owlkind from the evil Pure Ones.
The film features the voices of Emily Barclay, Abbie Cornish, Emilie de Ravin, Ryan Kwanten, Miriam Margolyes, Helen Mirren, Sam Neill, Geoffrey Rush, Jim Sturgess, Hugo Weaving and David Wenham.
Snyder is directing from a screenplay by Emil Stern and John Orloff.  The film is being produced by Zareh Nalbandian, with Donald De Line, Deborah Snyder, Lionel Wigram, Chris DeFaria, Kathryn Lasky and Bruce Berman serving as executive producers.
Opening soon across the Philippines, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole will be presented in 3D and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

While Soren dreams of someday joining his heroes, his older brother, Kludd (voice of Ryan Kwanten), scoffs at the notion, and yearns to hunt, fly and steal his father’s favor from his younger sibling. But Kludd’s jealousy has terrible consequences—causing both owlets to fall from their treetop home and right into the talons of the Pure Ones. Now it is up to Soren to make a daring escape with the help of other brave young owls.  Together they soar across the sea and through the mist to find the Great Tree, home of the legendary Guardians—Soren’s only hope of defeating the Pure Ones and saving the owl kingdoms.

Revenge Thriller " The American" strikes soon

From acclaimed director Anton Corbijn (the Cannes-winningControl) comes the suspense thriller The American starring Academy Award winner George Clooney in the title role. Adapted from Martin Booth’s 1990 novel A Very Private Gentleman, the film will be shown soon exclusively at Ayala Malls Cinemas (Trinoma, Glorietta 4 & Greenbelt 3).
In the film, Jack (Clooney) is an assassin constantly on the move and always alone. After a job in Sweden ends more harshly than expected for this American abroad, Jack retreats to the Italian countryside. He relishes being away from death for a spell as he holes up in a small medieval town. While there, Jack takes an assignment to construct a weapon for a mysterious contact, Mathilde (Thekla Reuten).

Savoring the peaceful quietude he finds in the mountains of Abruzzo, Jack accepts the friendship of local priest Father Benedetto (Paolo Bonacelli) and pursues a torrid liaison with a beautiful woman, Clara (Violante Placido). Jack and Clara’s time together evolves into a romance, one seemingly free of danger. But by stepping out of the shadows, Jack may be tempting fate.
Following the success of his award-winning first feature, the drama Control -- the biopic of Joy Division front man Ian Curtis -- director Anton Corbijn was deliberately looking to work on a new film centering on as different material as possible. He reveals, “I started reading thriller scripts. The theme of The American, of a loner trying to find redemption from the deeds he’s done, interested me – as did the tension and the romance in the story. Here was something I saw could be not only suspenseful but also thoughtful.

“My career for over 35 years has been as a portrait photographer; filmmaking is a new adventure for me. I’m still finding my voice. I feel that where The American does parallel Control is in the idea of trying to change one’s life; how can you maybe make good after doing wrong? Can you overcome things that might be in you which define you?”
The Western genre was a key inspiration to Corbijn in his formative years. He remembers, “I haven’t seen all that many movies in my life, but Westerns have long made an impression on me, starting with – in childhood – Rawhide [the 1960s TV series starring Clint Eastwood]. The look, the stories, the morality of movie Westerns always attracted me. Although The American is not actually a Western, it is structured in that genre; a stranger comes to a small town and connects with a couple of the people in it, but his past catches up with him – and there is a shootout.”
Producer Anne Carey concurs, noting that in The American, as in Westerns, “there is a man who has lived by the gun, and the violence that he’s lived by threatens to infect the peace that he’s tried to find in a place that he thinks he could live in.”
Screenwriter Rowan Joffe came to the material from several angles. He comments, “When they asked me to write The American, I was thrilled at the chance to adapt such a morally rich, visually arresting, and unusual novel.”
With Corbijn’s instruction to adapt it as a contemporary Western, Joffe simplified the overall structure into a character-motivated thriller with a streamlined plot, a powerful redemptive theme, very spare dialogue, and a wild Italian landscape that acts like a character in its own right, exerting its transformative, melancholy beauty on our hero and assisting him in his journey to redemption.
Joffe shares, “George Clooney’s interest in my first draft allowed me to continue refining subsequent drafts with him in mind; that was a considerable dramatic boon for the script as well as a rare opportunity to craft a character for one of the greatest movie actors alive.”

Justin Long is so into Drew in "GOING THE DISTANCE"

Emerging as one of Hollywood’s most in-demand actors today, Justin Long (He’s Just Not That Into You) figures in a long-distance love affair with Drew Barrymore in New Line Cinema’s rowdy romantic comedy Going the Distance.

In the film, when Erin (Barrymore) and Garrett (Long) hook up, their intentions are to have a few fun and frisky weeks before she heads back to grad school in San Francisco and he stays in New York City. But when Erin’s about to board a plane for home, they both realize they have developed deeper feelings for one another, and they don’t want whatever it is they have together to end. So, they decide to give the “long distance thing” a go.

“SALT” PASSES P100-M MARK IN 12 DAYS, STILL GOING STRONG!

There’s no stopping the tenacious Evelyn Salt in her box-office domination! Angelina Jolie’s power-packed action-thriller Salt breached the landmark P100-million gross Sunday, Aug. 8 or 12 days after its release. This according to Victor R. Cabrera, managing director of distributor Columbia Pictures Industries, Inc.

The film’s cumulative nationwide gross now stands at a spectacular P100.11-million, easily beating the final grosses of previous spy megahits such as Wanted (P94.65-M), Mr. & Mrs. Smith (P83.26-M) and all three Jason Bourne movies -- The Bourne Ultimatum (P58.07-M), The Bourne Supremacy (P35.90-M) and The Bourne Identity (P 36.80-M).

Salt also became the 2nd P100-M hit for Columbia this year, after last June’s blockbuster The Karate Kid.

The Philip Noyce-directed actioner continued to impress discriminating local critics. “Among the fine cinematic lessons Salt teaches is a veritable crash course in relentless editing for maximum suspense and visceral impact,” wrote Nestor Torre in his column. “From the film’s shocking start to its `twist within a twist’ conclusion, the movie’s pacing and ever-intensifying conclusion doesn’t let up until the viewer ends up feeling like a very wet and limp dishrag—no kidding.”

Widely-read columnist Scott Garceau wrote that after the expositional back-story, “Salt kicks into high gear and doesn’t look back. There are enough stunts here to fill a Die Hard trilogy or a handful of Jason Bourne flicks.”

The cinemas that posted the biggest grosses for “Salt” are Trinoma (P6.13-M), SM Mall of Asia (P5.04-M), Glorietta 4 (P3.90-M), SM Megamall (P3.65-M), SM North EDSA (P3.20-M), SM Cebu (P3.12-M), Greenbelt 3 (P3.11-M), Power Plant (P3.03-M), Alabang Town Center (P2.83-M) and Ayala Cebu (P2.66-M).

In the film, CIA officer Evelyn Salt (Jolie) swore an oath to duty, honor and country. Her loyalty will be tested when a defector accuses her of being a Russian spy. Salt goes on the run, using all her skills and years of experience as a covert operative to elude capture. Salt's efforts to prove her innocence only serve to cast doubt on her motives, as the hunt to uncover the truth behind her identity continues and the question remains: "Who Is Salt?"
